Have you ever had a bad day, feeling really let down, frustrated, or angry, and when you try to talk to someone about it—maybe your mom, friends, or family—they tell you to “think positive” or “be more positive”? It’s frustrating, right? You think, “Don’t you realise I’ve already tried that?” Nobody enjoys being overwhelmed by negative thoughts and self-doubt. We don’t choose to feel this way on purpose. So why can’t we just stop these negative thoughts?
The answer might surprise you:
It’s because you’re trying to stop them. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but hear me out. When you fight against your negative thoughts, they grow stronger. It’s like trying to calm a tantruming child by shouting at them—they just scream louder. Affirmations, positive thinking, and visualisations can work for a while, but the negative thoughts eventually come back, often even stronger.
Why?
Because by trying to suppress or ignore these thoughts, you’re inadvertently giving them more power. Negative thoughts aren’t random; they don’t just appear out of nowhere. They stem from real, often painful experiences and emotions.
Instead of fighting or ignoring these thoughts, give them space. Approach them with compassion, kindness, and love towards yourself. This shift in perspective—acceptance and curiosity rather than repression—can make all the difference. When you listen to these thoughts and try to understand their roots, magic happens.
You see, any negative thought you have is there for a reason.
It’s connected to a painful situation or experience. By understanding where these thoughts come from and resolving the underlying issues, you’re not just putting a temporary patch on them. You’re not fighting them anymore; you’re becoming allies with them.
Give your negative thoughts space, try to understand their roots, and approach them with compassion. That’s when true healing and transformation can begin.
